In return, it is your duty to serve the court by showing up to jury duty. Once you turn eighteen you are eligible to serve on a jury in your community. Many people dread the jury summons because it takes a lot of time out of your week. You have to take off work, show up to the county courthouse and wait. It is seemingly more of an annoyance than anything else.
It is important that you fulfill this civic duty. By having a jury of your peers the court system is much fairer. Who better understands the circumstances, the details and the events than the people who live in that community? This civic duty gives people the chance to bring justice to fellow community members.
There are numerous reasons why people can be found exempt from serving on a jury. If they personally know the key people involve they are excused. If you have a medical condition, you are a student or a business owner you are also excused. If you are over the age of seventy you are also excused.
Unless you really have a viable excuse, you should not try to get out of jury duty. As a community member, you should be concerned about both the accused as well as the victim. You should want to be directly involved with the legal system and the people in your community.
