When our nation is face with an international conflict our government official must draw upon numerous diplomacy methods before calling on our armed forces. Throughout history there have been many failed attempts. As a result, our government has implemented a selective service system that allows our military to call upon eligible citizens.
Women are exempt from signing up for the selective service. If you are a male, you are responsible for signing up for the selective service the day you turn eighteen. Once you are found eligible you will be in system until the day you turn twenty-six.
If we face any sort of international threat that goes above the capability of our current military, then the draft will be implemented. Men will be called by their birthdates. The chances of having the draft be reinstated are slim. It is a last resort and has was used in both World War II and Vietnam.
It is important that you register within thirty days of your eighteenth birthday. If you do not then you can face legal repercussions. Jail is the worst-case scenario but more than likely that will not happen. Instead, you will not be able to receive financial services when going to college. You will not be able to hold government or civil jobs.
These repercussions seem harsh but it is your civic duty as a male to protect your nation during a time of crisis. Even though we find ourselves in times of peace, we will need keep of selective service system incase we face an unseen threat
