According to Webster’s dictionary civics is defined as “The rights and responsibility of the individual within a society” While the textbook definition is clearly defined, it is a concept that can be misunderstood. Civic duties are the responsibility of the individual to give back and help benefit their community and nation.
As an American citizen, you have rights that you will be born with. Natural rights can never be taken away from you. On forefathers found our humanistic rights so important that they imbedded them into the United States Constitution. They fall into three categories; life, liberty and property.
You are protected by our nation and in return, you have obligations to fulfill to your country and your fellow citizens. Because we are so far removed from the ideals of our founders, many people do not understand the reciprocal relationship that citizens need to have with their government.
The civic duties are the defining feature of our society. Our mandatory civic duties include paying taxes, serving on a jury, signing up for the draft and abiding the laws of the land. You can also participate in volunteer civic duties such as voting, community service, and participation in local government and serving in the armed forces.
The entire concept of a democracy depends on people taking steps to benefit their own society. Without taxes, jury of peers, law abiding citizens, and a draft our society and government would collapse. It is the willingness of small sacrifices that has helped shape America.
